For the businesses dependent upon air cargo capacity out of Australia, things are likely to get tougher before they get easier. The cost of getting product to market is really going to test how well we have differentiated Australia as a premium provider.

Australia should think about how we can both manipulate the levers which lead to the provision of air freight capacity, and position Australian industry well for the coming global recovery as Australia catches up on the recovery curve. We need to think seriously about which of these structural changes are permanent, and to what degree, and how the policy position can be adjusted to support the cultivation of commercial relationships and business models which are fit for the new normal.

We have packed people off on their grandest adventures or in pursuit of their brightest opportunities. We have helped console children and comfort the elderly. We have poured a wine for the weary business traveller and shared a warm joke and smile to break through the stress and solitude. We have hugged – though we probably shouldn’t have. We have cried a little when no one could see. We have spent our own money to solve a passenger’s small problem. We have let them know that we care. What a privilege.

Are you even an airline anymore?

In so many industries we have witnessed a separation of the asset base and the marketplace (or who owns the sales funnel). We saw Uber separate the marketplace from who owns the cars in the personal transport industry. We have seen AirBnB separate the marketplace from who owns the accommodation. And we are familiar with the idea that the largest provider of accommodation, globally, does not own real estate. The world’s largest retailers do not own inventory – it’s a model that has disrupted many industries globally. Given the current situation, we should ask, is it aviation’s turn? 

A resilient, growth oriented and sustainable airport business plan must optimise both aeronautical and non-aeronautical revenue development. In a recently published report by ACI World, based on 2018 figures, non-aeronautical revenues account for 39.2% of income for the whole sector, highlighting the importance of non-aeronautical revenue for airport sustainability.

The changing role of air cargo

Only a few days ago Air Canada announced that their air cargo revenues had outstripped their passenger revenues for the first time ever. This is likely happening for multiple airlines - especially those who like Air Canada, have been aggressive enough with the cargo opportunity to drive a real result for their business. This poses a unique challenge for the airports sector who have perhaps not fully optimised the revenue that could be realised from air cargo services, focusing instead on non-aero passenger revenues.
